This year for my personal art project I have decided to honor some very special people that give so much in our community. There are hundreds of charities both big and small in our communities looking for help in several categories, monetary donations, gift donations for the gala, marketing help, etc. Over the years we have noticed some familiar names in several charities throughout our communities. So as my personal art project this year we thought we would recognize these folks with an “environmental” oil painting. An environmental oil painting is an interpretive painting that helps tell something about the subject. The goal when viewing the portrait is to learn something about the subject, usually a favorite hobby/passion of theirs. With the help of the Monmouth Ocean Development Council, The Jersey Shore Chamber of Commerce and the Brick Chamber we were able to connect with several of these community leaders. After sitting down with them and getting to know them we were able to create these interpretive oil paintings. We plan on unveiling these art pieces with everyone honored along with their friends and families. No one will see the finalized paintings till the night of the event (I love surprises)
We will be highlighting everyone so you get to know each person along with some sneak peeks of their paintings as they come to fruition.
Paul Barlo is our first to highlight, he was a delight to work with and a great help with my Art Project. Here is bio but I'm sure this barely scratches the surface of his knowledge and generosity.
As architect emeritis of the firm Barlo, Governale and Associates, Paul has acted as founding designer, principal planner and project manager. The firm has received the NJ AIA Architectural Firm of the Year Award numerous times. Paul is a magnum cum laud graduate of the University of Notre Dame and studied in Rome, Italy. Paul was a pioneer in the design/build concept and he has appeared on the PBS “This Old House” series featuring the rebuilding efforts at the Jersey Shore after Superstorm Sandy. As an architect, Paul believes it is not just about the physical environment that surrounds us, but also the quality of the social fabric of our community. Paul is very active volunteering at numerous organizations dedicated to helping those in need. He has been a Rotarian since 1984, serving as president and becoming a Paul Harris Fellow. He is a trustee at SOS (Seeds of Service), an organization helping those who have lost their homes. He is a trustee of both Homes Now, and the Chambers Bridge Residence, which provide affordable housing. Paul is a former trustee of the Food Bank and Dottie’s House, a shelter for battered women.
Paul has served as president of many organizations over the years including: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ocean County, the Brick Township Chamber of Commerce, Brick Rotary lunch club, Dottie’s House, Jersey Shore Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, (AIA), the Monmouth Ocean County Development Council, (MODC), and the Chambersbridge Residence.
Paul has received recognition by several organizations in our community. He was Grand Marshal of the Columbus Day Parade, the Brick C of C “Jersey Shore Champion”, and the Jersey Shore and State AIA “Architect of the Year” in 2016. He is the recipient of the MODC “Silver Gull Award”, the Pinnacle and Presidents Award from Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Ocean County, and the Brick Township “Distinguished Citizen” award.
